On August 10, 2026, a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck western Colombia, with its epicenter near San José del Palmar in the department of Chocó. The Colombian Geological Service described it as the country’s strongest earthquake of the 21st century. Severe shaking damaged communities throughout western and central Colombia, including Cali, Pereira, Quibdó and Manizales, destroying homes and damaging schools, hospitals, roads and other essential infrastructure.

The disaster has left at least 280 people dead, more than 4,000 injured, and many others missing or displaced, although casualty figures have continued to change as assessments are completed. Rescue and relief operations have gradually shifted toward providing food, shelter, medical care and rebuilding damaged communities. The recovery is expected to be extensive, with preliminary economic losses estimated at nearly $9.6 billion.
