Blessing of The Pets

A Catholic blessing of the pets is a short prayer service that asks God to protect a pet and gives thanks for the animal’s companionship, usually held around the October 4th feast day of St. Francis of Assisi.

What Happens During the Blessing?

• Gathering: Pet owners bring their dogs, cats, birds, and other animals—often kept on leashes or in carriers.
• Prayer and Scripture: The priest or deacon reads a short passage from Scripture or offers a prayer of thanksgiving for creation.
• Holy Water: The clergy member says a blessing over the animals and gently sprinkles them with holy water.
