A Catholic seminarian is a man who is preparing for the priesthood through prayer, academic study, spiritual formation, and pastoral experience. He lives in a seminary or participates in seminary formation while discerning whether God is calling him to become a priest.
The length of formation varies depending on a man’s age, education, and previous experience. In general, a seminarian entering after high school may spend about 8 years in formation: usually 4 years of college-level philosophy and liberal arts, followed by about 4 years of theology.
A man who already has a college degree may have a shorter path, often around 5 to 6 years, depending on how much philosophy and religious study he has already completed. His formation typically includes pre-theology, graduate theology studies, pastoral work in parishes, and spiritual direction.
Near the end of formation, a seminarian is ordained a transitional deacon before being ordained a priest. Throughout the process, the Church and the seminarian continue to discern whether he is truly called to serve God’s people as a Catholic priest.
