4th Sunday of Easter B21

“Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we shall be has not yet been revealed.”[1]

This is a classic case of what the Italians call “già e non ancora”, already but not yet. As a result of God’s love, we as believers have already been reborn as children of God. But, it’s not complete. We, like children, have to grow by learning and living Gospel values. Ultimately we are promised identification with God since “we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.”[2]

Ponder that reality and that promise. What dignity we have and will have!

However, God does not give a gift without a condition. And that condition is this: recognizing the gift that is given to me, I must also recognize that every believer, and even those who are not yet members of the fold, has the same dignity and promise.

Chew on that for a while; digest it; make it part of you; and act on it.
