Mary, Mother of God
This is a Holy Day that has been searching for an identity. It’s further complicated by being New Year’s Day. When people of my age and older were younger, it was called “The Circumcision of Jesus”. In time the higher ups in the Church took pity on poor parents who were asked by their children what that meant. For a while, it was celebrated as “World Day of Peace” and “The Motherhood of Mary”. Finally it became what we now celebrate today, “The Solemnity of Mary, The Holy Mother of God”.
This feast at the beginning of the year tells us about clarity and perspective coming with the passage of time.
Beside a few shepherds and some mysterious travelers from a far, few in 1st century Judea or Galilee considered Mary of Nazareth to be anyone special. But as that son came to be recognized as the Son of God, Mary was rightly called the Mother of God whose feast we celebrate under that title today.
As we start this New Year, may we be not too quick to judge others. Who knew then how it would all turn out? Who knows now how things will turn out?
And, through the intercession of Mary, may 2021 be a better year than 2020. AMEN !!!
