“Scripture is living and active, and so it remains God’s Word spoken to whomever has the courage to pick it up and receive it.”
Dr. Tim Gray, Praying Scripture for a Change.
Meeting God in Scripture
Lectio Divinia is a beautiful way to prayerfully dive deeper into scripture. It is the process by which we can realize the God is speaking directly to each one of us. First, read the scripture. Really take the time to focus on the passage you are reading. What is the setting? Can you picture the people and the environment in your mind? Meditate or think about what you have just read. What word or passage jumped out at you? Why did the author choose these words, this setting, this audience? Who do you most connect to? Where would you be in this passage? Next, is simply praying or talking to God about what you are thinking. Lastly, contemplating or resting with God and your prayer. Think about what you should remember about this passage.
The Steps for Lectio then include:
- Read the scripture passage, taking time to pay attention to phrases or words that grab your attention.
- Meditate or reflect upon what you have read. What is God’s message to you?
- Respond as you reread the passage again. How can you respond to God’s word?
- Contemplate: Sit quietly and open yourself
As with all the prayer types we are sharing, there are wonderful resources available online for a deeper dive into any of the prayer styles.
