Perhaps one of the most recognizable of the contemporary saints is Saint Teresa of Calcutta. Saint Teresa was placed on the fast track to sainthood by Pope John Paul II and canonized by Pope Francis in 2016. A vocal advocate for the “least among us,” St. Teresa lived out her calling to “follow Christ into the slums to serve him among the poorest of the poor,” after teaching for fifteen years with the Sisters of Loreto.
We must not forget that Saint Teresa faced a multitude of challenges just in trying to answer God’s call to serve his most vulnerable including leaving the religious order she had joined, convincing the church to allow her to start a new religious order, and navigating the political and societal hierarchy in Calcutta. Perhaps the greatest lesson we can learn from Saint Teresa is how to view the world through the eyes of Christ. She did not see those she ministered to as broken or less than, but as sacred children of God worthy of her love. While her work was exhausting and heartbreaking, her faith and fidelity in God remained firm. In the coming week try starting your day as Saint Teresa began her day with the simple statement “Good morning Jesus,” and pray that we will be given the strength, courage and wisdom to live out our individual call.
