Our Catholic faith and the Gospels call us to be active and responsible participants in our society. The Catholic Church has always taken this obligation seriously through the many services it provides to those in need: whether that need arises from acute poverty, serious illness, or distress in the family. The Church also continues to offer guidance through its statements on the moral and social issues confronting society. This mission of the Church, however, is constantly being challenged in the public square. These challenges may come in the form of cutbacks in vital social services to the poor and needy, or from executive/legislative actions that run contrary to Church teachings. Recently, these challenges have also included an increased governmental threat to religious freedom in our society.
