Our Catholic faith and the Gospels call us to be active and responsible participants in our society. The Catholic Church has always taken this obligation seriously through the many services it provides to those in need: whether that need arises from acute poverty, serious illness, or distress in the family. The Church also continues to offer guidance through its statements on the moral and social issues confronting society. This mission of the Church, however, is constantly being challenged in the public square. These challenges may come in the form of cutbacks in vital social services to the poor and needy, or from executive/legislative actions that run contrary to Church teachings. Recently, these challenges have also included an increased governmental threat to religious freedom in our society.
In an effort to confront these challenges to the teachings of the Church, the Bishops of Connecticut have utilized the Connecticut Catholic Legislative Network to communicate our concerns to our Catholic population since 2005. The purpose of this Network is two-fold, to:
- Inform Catholics regarding current social issues from a Catholic perspective.
- Alert members about legislative issues which are being debated on the State and Federal level that impact our Catholic community.
The increased participation of parishioners registering with our Network strengthens the voice of the Church in Connecticut.
